S.A.B.A. members Bob Robinson and Richard Brown, along with model builder and 1:1 builder/driver Mike Bell, for the last six years have been helping youngsters at the Blazers Boys and Girls Club in Northeast Portland realize the fun and excitement of the model building hobby. They meet for two hours every Monday, all year. For most of the young boys and girls building models is a new adventure, something they are initially excited and enthusiastic about, but quickly turns to defeat and frustration. Enter Bob, Mike and Richard who are always able to coax the youngster to completion and smiles. For some of them one model is enough, for others it becomes a challenge to be tried again. They learn skills that make them willing to keep trying and to become better at building. No small task given all the diversion that is apart of their lives. The excitement and joy they experience, and we watch, in assembling pieces of plastic and rubber into a model of an automobile, is priceless. Above all they learn how the many skills they learn can be transfered to school and their daily lives. And that there is a community that cares about them, and wants to see them succeed. What started as an idea to get more and younger people involved in the hobby turned, out to be an example of the willingness of many to positively impact the lives of young people. To get things started we had an model car exhibit displaying models by S.A.B.A. members, Wayne Stevens, Les Richardson, Bob Robertson and Richard Brown, that sparked an interest that has not diminished.
We are thankful to many who have made this possible.
Charlie James was probably the first to help. He asked us to come to his home to pick up some models, what we thought would be a couple of boxes turned out to be a van with roof rack full of models, we were off and running, or should I say building.
Bear’s Toy Wholesale allowed us to buy models and supplies at a discount and donations.
Glenn Irving via internet, helped with the design and building of an airbrush compressor.
Appliance Recyclers, United Fire Health and Safety Equipment donated material to build the airbrush compressor.
Advanced Finishing Systems designed and had built our paint booth.
Tammie”s Hobbies discounted models.
Portland Trailblazers donated cash in Richard Brown’s name.
Boys and Girls Club continues to provide space and has purchased models.
